‘Secrets,’ Debbie Reynolds, plenty of great dancing on ‘So You Think’ You Can Dance’

Debbie Reynolds is the guest judge for a very important show. Two couples will be sent home Thursday night because the judges didn’t send home any couples last week in an unprecedented move. In an attempt to balance out the looming double elimination, we learn secrets about each of the dancers. (As usually, the “secrets” are kind of lame.)

First, we learn that Ricky’s real name is Roderick and Ryan’s leg hair grows fast.

The two dance to a Mandy Moore jazz routine. They dance to “Addicted To Love” by Robert Palmer. They dance really clean. The routine isn’t as sexy as I thought it was going to be.Judge Nigel Lythgoe says it is “sensational.” He adds that he wanted to throw a bucket of water on them. Judge Mary Murphy says she is “addicted” to the two of them. She says Ryan turned into a “warrior vixen.” Ricky was in character the whole way, according to Mary. Debbie says she hasn’t seen anyone dance sexier.

Caitlynn and Mitchell are next. Her secret is that her feet turn colors because of her boots. Mitchell likes to wear a zebra print snuggie. I can’t understand Mitchell’s butchered English during the behind the scenes footage. The pair dance a Stacey Tookey contemporary routine to “Turning Tables” by Adele. The routine is choreographed around a living room set. The lights are dimmed to blue. It’s very passionate, but seems kind of forced. Mitchell accidentally hits Caitlynn in face during the routine. The only reason we know is because she’s bleeding from the nose following the performance. The chemistry between the two dancers is so believable, Mary says. She calls the performance flawless. Debbie says they were so beautiful. Nigel says he’s glad Mitchell is healthy. “I thought it was outstandingly danced by you two,” he adds.

Wadi and Missy areĀ  next with the Cha-cha. Wadi’s secret is that he used ladies hair removal cream. Missy’s laugh is her secret. Lame.

Jean-Marc Genereux is the choreographer. He says it’s the most difficult routine he’s choreographed for the show. Things don’t look promising. They dance to Cannibal by Kesha. Missy is clearly the better dancer. But Wadi keeps up.

Debbie says the routine very good. Nigel says that there is a lot missing from Wadi’s technique. Nigel says that Missy is spicy, hot, and very good. Mary says that Wadi is respectable and that Missy is the “Cha-cha queen.” Debbie flirts with Wadi, telling him that he can cha-cha with her any time.

Iveta and Nick are next with the season’s first Bollywood routine. Iveta secret is that she talks to herself in the mirror. Nick always wears shorts. Lame.

Nakul Dev Mahajan choreographs the piece. He says that the routine is going to be extremely fast. They dance to “Baawre” from the “Lucky by Chance” soundtrack. It’s fast and they are pretty much in sync, but it’s not the best Bollywood routine I’ve seen on the show. Nigel says that it was entertaining. He says that Joshua and Katee from season four were better. He adds that that pair was further into the season when they performed their routine. Mary gushes about the partnering. Debbie says they are terrific.

Miranda and Robert are next with a Napoleon and Tabitha choreographed hip-hop routine. Robert’s secret is that he thinks he’s a pro wrestler. Miranda has a crush on Tad. (That’s kind of interesting.)

Napoleon says the routine is one of the most intricate routines he’s choreographed. They dance to “Break Your Neck” by Busta Rhynmes. During the routine, she appears to fall forward after completing her back flip. But the routine is good. Mary says that the routine works. she says Robert does an amazing job. She says Miranda is sharp and clean. Debbie says they are fabulous. Nigel says he loves the routine. He says that Miranda is the best contemporary dancer he’s seen do hip hop. Nigel compliment’s Robert and his lack of the “woowhoo’s.” Amen!

Clarice and Jess are next with a Stacey Tookey contemporary routine. Clarice sleeps with her eyes open. Jess draws a stick figure orchaestra. Lame. During the practice footage it’s revealed that Jess has a problem with the lifts. Surprise! Surprise! Who would have thunk that the lifts would be a problem for the vertically challenged Jess? (I’ve been saying that since we first saw him.) Anywho, the two dance to “Cathedrals” by Jump Little Children. It’s a good mix of dance, emotion, and tricks. Debbie says they touched her heart. Nigel says he enjoys part of the routine. “I loved the work that you did separately,” he says. He adds that the coupling feels uncomfortable to him. Mary says that Clarice is a beautiful dancer.

Jordan and Tad are next with the Viennese Waltz. (Finally a dance where Jordan has to look classy!) Jordan’s secret is that she’s dumb. (Shocker!) Tad has OCD.

They dance a Jean-Marc Geneareux routine to “Fade Into Me” by David Cook. The routine is kind of blah to me. Nigel, who is obsessed with Jordan, loves the routine. Nigel praises Tad’s ability to dance this genre. Mary says Tad is the biggest surprise of the season. Debbie says they are as good as Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers. At this point I’m questioning whether or not Debbie is losing it. Melanie and Marko are next. Melanie has an issue with people toucking her ears. Marko loves to read romance novels. The two dance a Mandy Moore jazz routine to “Sing With a Swing (Raf Marchesini Remix)” by DWS. It’s danced well. But my issue is with the choreography. It’s not Mandy’s best work. Although the choreography does get better midway through the routine. Mary loves the routine saying it is “so good.” She adds that they can handle anything. Debbie praises them. Nigel says they are part of a perfect partnership. Alexander and Sasha are next. Sasha’s secret? She sweats like a dude, according to Alexander. Alexander’s? He loves to look at himself in the mirror.

They dance a hip hop routine by Napoleon and Tabitha. The routine is themed to a soldier returning from Afghanistan to his wife. They dance to “Coming Home” by Diddy featuring Dirty Money and Skylar Grey. The routine is nuanced, fast, and passionate. Debbie says they are beautiful dancers. She starts crying. Mary also cries. She says the story is too close to her life. She says that Sasha’s soul brings the routine home for her. Nigel says it is ironic because of President Obama’s announcement to bring home the troops. Nigel says they do a fantastic job.

Ashley and Chris are next with a Broadway routine. Their secrets? Chris has a creepy smile when he gets nervous. Ashley thinks she has swag, but doesn’t, according to Chris.

They dance a Spencer Liff choreographed routine to “Please Mr. Jailer” by Rachel Sweet. They use a set of prison bars as a prop. The routine is sultry and sexy. And the two do a lot of tricks. It’s inventive because they are separated by the bar the entire routine. Nigel praises the choreography and the ability of the choreographer to adapt to a new genre. He adds that Ashley is beautiful. Mary says the routine is worthy of the Hot Tamale train. (Her first of the evening.) Debbie says they are “wonderful, great, and sensational.”

I’m curious to see what two couples go home. What do you think?
