TERRE HAUTE — Preparations are wrapping up for the third Annual Blueberry Festival in Terre Haute. The festival is coming up this Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Terre Haute.
The Blueberry Festival was started to help raise money to open the doors for the upcoming co-op store in downtown Terre Haute called Terre Foods. The festival is co-sponsored and staged at the Central Presbyterian Church at 125 N. Seventh St.
Organizers of the festival do their part to keep the carbon footprint for the festival as low as possible. The blueberries are purchased as local as current weather conditions permit. Last year, organizers drove to Northern Indiana to pick up more than 1,000 pounds of blueberries.
“It is part of the whole philosophy of the co-op, natural foods, good foods, good for the planet, and sustainability,” Terre Foods member Denise Conrady said.
Those looking to get their daily does of antioxidants can get a heaping cup of blueberries, blueberry compote and ice cream and any combination of the previous mentioned. Vendors will also be selling blueberry bushes, honey and baked goods all while being accompanied by the tempo of local musicians. Materials about Terre Foods will also be available to give visitors a better understanding of the advantages of a food co-op in Terre Haute.
“Our hope is through the Blueberry Festival we will get the co-op off the ground,” Conrady said.
Those who will find themselves cooling off while digging into a nice cool cup of blueberries will be doing so with compostable serving dishes and utensils.
“Last year we had a bin that showed how much the utensils from the previous year composted. It was interesting for the kids to see the display,” Conrady said.
Recycling bins will be provided around the festival.
Help make the blueberry festival go off without a hitch
• Volunteers are needed for the Terre Foods annual downtown Blueberry Festival is planned from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Central Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Seventh St.
• Opportunities include set-up (from 9 to 11 a.m.), selling tickets, serving blueberries and ice cream, selling baked goods, making baked goods to sell (contact Susie Lanoo at sjlannoo@gmail.com) and lending a roaster or crock pot. Also, two-hour shifts are available.
• Volunteers will receive a blueberry T-shirt, and can order a six-quart case of blueberries in advance for $15. Cases will be sold at the festival for $20 as long as supplies last.

• Volunteers are also needed for the Terre Foods tent at at the Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday.
• Help is sought for July and August. Volunteers are not expected to have all the answers. Brochures will be available to pass out.
