Song of the Day: ‘Sweet Old World,’ Emmylou Harris

A friend’s suicide inspired Lucinda Williams to write “Sweet Old World,” a song that is basically a list of all the things that the person is now missing out on (“The breath from your own lips/The touch of fingertips/A sweet and tender kiss …”). The things, in other words, that the person was not appreciative enough of.

This makes it a perfect song for Thanksgiving listening. Despite its sad origins, the song ends up being a heart-warming — almost uplifting, in its own strange way — meditation on the things we should be thankful about.

Williams released her song on her 1992 album of that name, and Emmylou Harris sang it with her usual sensitivity — and with Neil Young helping out on harmonica and harmony vocals — on her 1995 “Wrecking Ball” album. Here is Harris’ version:
